Our next book is Heat by Bill Buford. This is a book that promises to take us back into the frenzy of the professional kitchen, so I hope you enjoy it. It also has the subtitle " An amateur's adventures as kitchen slave, line cook, pasta-maker, and apprentice to a Dante-quoting butcher in Tuscany." What's not to like about that?

We will meet as usual in the Summertown Wine Cafe.

Wednesday May 27, 2009

End: 22:00

The book is Portrait of a Chef: the Life of Alexis Soyer by Helen Morris. Unfortunately, it is out of print, but can be obtained used from Amazon and other sources. Please join us for a discussion of Soyer, a nineteenth-century celebrity chef, author, inventor and campaigner to improve hospital kitchens in Crimea.

We will meet as usual in the Summertown Wine Cafe.

After quite a few meetings, our proposal is taken shape and has been accepted by Slow Food UK and the Festival organisation committee

Therefore there will be a Slow Food stand at the Festival, managed by Slow Food UK with heavy support form our little convivium...

The idea is to walk kids through the senses allowing them to enjoy food on the basis of guessing games

We obviously need volunteers on this, the more the merrier... even a couple of hours of your time during the weekend of the 27-28th of June would be greatly appreciated!

One of Jeremy's friends is a wine merchant with a 'penchant' for sweet wine. Mark will come and talk to us about the nuances behind this generic term and will advise us on how to marry them with food.

Cost: £20 per head, providing you with the wine and nibbles.
